Here's how it working for the vast sea of people whose permanent reduced fare ID card goes flooey:

You send in your card for replacement (takes many weeks or months) and you start buying 2 trip round trip tickets for $2.75. Each is like a throwaway paper version of the Metrocard and you get two per purchase. Each one works just like a Metrocard giving you a ride and a free transfer, bus to bus, subway to bus, bus to subway.
So nothing is lost except for the fact they will sell you only ONE at a time so you spend a lot of time in the "token booth" line.
But you don't lose any money or rides.

They must encounter a LOT of these failed cards because each booth is well stocked with these replacement card combos.

My card seems to be working fine again but partner is surviving on the twofers.

When I used to take the bus to work, I would often, after getting out of the train, have it take a second fare from me. It didn't make sense for me at the time to buy an unlimited but I did have that happen to me far too often.

The free transfer that ISN'T is not rare. I think it has happened to us all who are on the pay per ride system.

I just cannot ever break even with an unlimited card, so I just take the extra fare in stride. If I had to guess, I would say it happens every tenth transfer.
It just about nullifies the 11% "bonus."
