This sign was commonly located in the area of school, and, for many years, its kind existed throughout New York City. Dating back to the 1960s, the school crosswalk sign is unique to there, and, when compared to today's modern variation, the figures are noticeably thicker than those on the sign of present day.
I came across the item by accident at a local antique store I visit from time to time, and I knew I had to buy it. The owner of the place told me it originally came from Lower Manhattan. In the area of the original World Trade Center complex.
Here's an example that was in service from Brooklyn. From the closing credits of the late 1970s television show
"Welcome back, Kotter."
Today, in New York City, signs of this kind are few and far between. Only a handful remain intact.
