not always a great Idea, but it works for some.

NYers I know have secure jobs near port authority bus terminal, and bus to work. 90 minutes each way, if all is normal, station to station. any bad accident on rt 80 means delays, no way out as exits are miles apart. and if it snows, you will be stuck in the city until the roads are cleared. nut damn, 15+hrs on the road sucks.

they leave one parent at home at all times, or bring extended families to share in child care. they need two cars , reliable with awd/4x4. they shop in bulk always, and require a big sub zero freezer and washer dryer to their household utility, they have to deal with a bus monopoly, that prevents and sabotages competing service, Jitneys, and even a proposed commuter rail system. If they offer rail service, tons of people will show up!

they also deal with police un necessary stops, because they look different. they may have to deal with un acceptance by they fellow neighbors and residents with roots there. Some towns just are not used to seeing latinos and darker skin, and different religious groups will have an even harder time adjusting, unless these groups come in numbers.

some of them pay for the home in cash, since you can find sub $100000 homes with acreage. just paying taxes and expenses is attractive! some will grow vegetables and sell surplus at a farmers market. i know one guy who is a flea market vendor, and he does well selling items obtained in ny .I know another that offers a underground van service to manhattan. there are crafty ways to make money.

but it sucks, wake up at 4 am to come to work by 7 am. and back home by 5 pm if your lucky. I know of one guy who drove to jersey to take the train in. some prefer to work nights to avoid traffic and see their kids, basically sleeping 4 to 5 hours a day, and ruining their marriages.

and those families from the hood, that hope for better things for their kids, a differnt life. their kids just fall into the stereo type of what people think about nyers, on how they act. they either dont want to be accepted or are not given a chance to be accepted to their new neighborhood . If you have high school aged teens , with ties back in the old neighborhood, drugs will just eventually find its way. but still sad some of these young kids cant just blend in . some of the kids bring their defenses and survival skill , at full volume, although it is not always necessary.

Personally, I moved outta NY over a year and half ago and to be totally honest I love it!! Haven't had any real problems. Where I work now I make more than I would in NY (cuz I would have to wait for $15 in 2 or 3 more years. Where I rent is VERY affordable. I also got a car and pay very low insurance. So things are going well so far. The only concern I have is that if there are New Yorkers looking to migrate up thIs way, that they DO NOT (and I repeat) DO NOT bring that "hood" or "ghetto" mentality up here. The locals who live up here are kind, helpful and friendly, and if they bring that non sense up here, it'll only confirm the stereotype of how NY'ers really are abd I may have been from there and lived there for 43 yrs but that's not what I wanna be "labeled" as. Hence the reason I moved from NY. Good move I made so far, I just hope I don't regret it.

You nake a very good point. Of these young people move up here it will just ruin the area. I P

I really wouldn't mind living in Allentown

-Close to Philly and to a lesser extent NYC
-There's a Waffle House
-Puerto Rican booty everywhere
-Rents are way lower than NYC

we had a house in lake wallenpaupack as a part time residence for 5 years . . just a beautiful area in pike county .unlike monroe county which is over crowded and parts of it are pretty nasty .

but we sold back in 2012. as much as we liked the area it really was no place we would want to retire to . we much preferred queens .

it just lacked all the things we would want in retirement .

if we could not drive there was no public transportation system .

nothing to do all winter once you stopped skiing

medical specialists were few

medical facilities were few

winters were long ,cold and icy .

no where to work if i wanted to work a bit except for low wages .

even in the summers we were running out of fresh things to do ,that walk in the woods or around the lake got stale awfully fast .

the negatives were pretty long to that more rural living as you get older

I would move out there to move out there, but not to live a dual-life commuting all the way to NYC. Too far. But if I wanted some rural land for rural lifestyle at a decent price, sure. It is beautiful out there.

prices have been plunging in most of the pocono's . lack of interest hit very hard .

the people we bought from in 2007 paid 275k to build the house , we paid 235k and sold it 5 years later for 235k . the people we sold it to sold it last january for 65k less than we sold to them .

many homes went unsold and i still see them listed . the business's have been folding all over .

like the catskills saw happen , families interested in the pocono's today for anything more than a vacation are becoming rarer and rarer .

it is just to costly today to keep a part time place going unless it is used heavily . we had no mortgage and it cost us about 10k a year to maintain and keep going year round .

but we were also giving up 10k in income on the money tied up in the house so the effective cost was about 20k a year . certainly a lot of dough for something used every other weekend if that much .

the winters were tough as every time there was a storm coming or going so we didn't go quite often in the winter . i-84 could be closed in the winter out that way at any time , with you on it. lol

Prices are beginning to rebound in Monroe. Of course it’s nowhere near their height but homes that were selling for 80k five years ago are up over 100k. Being in Carbon my house has appreciated steadily, not large numbers, but I’d rather see up rather than down.

Oh, I agree. But forward progress at least. At one point my cousin in Monroe was over 100K underwater, that's now less than half of that. He may be able to sell before he dies. That is, if he can find someone to pay 11k in taxes and HOA fees.
