Hello everybody,

I think we need more info. What is your budget for an apartment? Where will you be working in Manhattan? How long of a commute to your job can you tolerate?

You are right.
The maximum to spend is 600 / 700 $. I don't know where I will work, I'm a musician so I will need to travel around the city...I think it's easy with subways and other trasports...isn't it? |

You aren't going to find anything for livable for $600/$700 dollars in New York. Try finding a roommate.

Yeah you will need a roommate. Even in areas far from Manhattan I think around $900 is the cheapest you will be able to find for a studio/1 bedroom.

With $600-700 you will not find a studio or 1 bedroom even remotely close to NYC. You may need to go all the way up to Albany or Poughkeepsie before things get in that range. Even with $700 to split a 2 bedroom with a roommate you will have a hard time. Could probably be doable in Staten Island or some areas of the Bronx. If safety is not a concern there are options but I assume you are not interested in living in a high crime area.
If you want to live on your own a studio in a good borough neighborhood (Manhattan is not an option for you so forget about that idea) you will need to almost double your budget. If you are willing to live with a roommate in one of those same neighborhoods you will need to up your budget to around $800-900 or more. |

hello ,
i'm a musician and a future rock star. I'm in need of an appartment in staten island , like an old garage or wash-cars to have my rehearsal space to music all day. ive heard of bushwik or sth like that in ny already for such matters . But my goal is also to live with musicians , surrounded in some sort of artists space ( like the students ambiance) And if staten island is such a nice place for musicians ( as i'vre read on wikipedia ... even thoughi've read here philiadelphia was also good for this) why not ? I lived one year in rostock , next to berlin in germany and i like the vibe , get up morning , people brunshing on the street , heavy heaaaavy clubs .fantastic clothes , still contact with the neighbours and house , drum and bass .. modern approach Thats what i need ... A rehearsal space ( im now stucked in france countryside ... work to save 7500 dollars .. dyou know the prize of these per month in staten island ? ) Would it please me from what you've read ? thanks |

Yes somehow I doubt Staten Island is what you're looking for.

Honestly, check out Philadelphia. I LOVE Philly and almost moved there myself except that the job prospects are a little tougher there. It is an awesome city with a huge grassroots music scene. I know at least half a dozen people who moved there from NYC because of how expensive it is here. They love it there and I go down to visit a few times each year. It is a ~$12 ride to Philly on the Chinatown bus and only two hours from the city so you can make frequent visits. It has a very young, hip population and it's not a fake, pretentious scene like you may find in the hipster nabes in Brooklyn. Much more affordable than NYC and incredibly walkable with beautiful and dense historic neighborhoods. If you aren't dead set on NYC check it out. I think you will like it. Friends have actually compared it to Berlin in the way that there is a lot going on there in art and music. NYC is just too expensive to foster artists and muscians these days. |
