But for the sake of making a decision it should be based on what the commute is like in actualty. Everyone knows the ride on the E and F is a miserable one in the rush hour. Trains are usually packed like cattle. If you held a decent job in manhattan it would not be the first choice of commute.

They'd have you thinking that the LIRR is a long treacherous commute. Kind of like the Oregon trail. But the Staten Island ferry teleports you to your office faster than the speed of light.

I'm not saying it's first choice! Please read what I wrote.

And of course you would have to base your decision on an actual commute time. But since I have not had to commute between Jamaica and Chelsea, nor have I ever had to commute from Staten Island to Chelsea, I am suggesting to look at the estimated time (non-delay time) and add in some time for delays. If you somehow have done both of these commutes, which would be quite unusual, since that would mean you've lived in both Jamaica and Staten Island, and commuted from both places to Chelsea, then you can do the comparison for us.

Also I thought most trains at rush hour are packed but I don't ride every train at that hour, so I don't know.

The E and F were the first subways I rode when I first moved to queens. It's been bad since way back and never improved. I would not recommend Jamaica even as third or fourth choice when there is astoria, Jackson hts, forest hills or rego park to choose from. It would take a big feat of engineering to make Jamaica a good commuting option to manhattan

My understanding is that Jamaica is quite a bit cheaper than all the other places you mentioned. One bedroom apartments in Jackson Heights are now going for $1850 to $2000. I am sure the same is true for Forest Hills and Rego Park. I'm talking about a location choice for someone who has a low budget, not someone who can afford a 1-bedroom for $2000.

But if you want to keep arguing your point, go for it. I tried to explain what I meant over and over several times now and you don't seem to be getting it.

Then it would not make it "the next hottest neighborhood" (see thread title) if only "people with a low budget" move there. I thought the point was for a place to attract more affluent residents.

OH right, you're completely correct. Just ignore everything I said. It's totally wrong. I must be posting in the wrong thread.

It's largely irrelevant. Jamaica cannot be the next hottest neighborhood by virtue of geography and poor infrastructure. It would need first class commercial development nearby before if becomes hot. Be honest about it. Look at those white collar families who moved to Jackson Hts whose kids play in Traverse Park, attend PS 69 or Garden School, and parents commute to Manhattan. They're not actually affluent by NYC standards. Do you really think more of them will move to Jamaica?

We were comparing it to Staten Island though. Not parts of Queens that are closer to Manhattan.

They are defining hot by the % increase in prices. Not how many hipsters will move in or by average temperature or any other measure.
