So today I decided to jump the turnstile because the stupid ticket machine malfunctioned and I had been waiting in line for probably at least 15 minutes for people in need of filling their cards.
I was running behind thanks to this mismanagement and I was not about to step into the other line and wait another 15 minutes because the one I was in line for suddenly malfunctioned.
I was willing to risk it and saw several other people decide to do the same thing. I was looking around and very paranoid that an undercover cop may have been following me but whatever.

In the future, you may want to adopt the habit of never needing to refill your card on your way somewhere. I always refill my card on my way home. Someone suggested that to me a few years ago and it's been very helpful. I also keep an extra MetroCard in my wallet for emergencies, but that's my OCD lol.
You don't pays your money, and you takes your chances.
Have seen persons given summons at or on buses for fare evasion; also seen same at subways. You just cannot give a blanket statement saying "it never" or "it always" happens.
When you consider the thousands of bus NYC bus routes and scores of subway stations no, NYPD cannot be everywhere so statistically some percentage of fare evasion is not caught. However that will be cold comfort to *YOU* if law of averages decides your time is up when you make that move.
Last week the ticket machines for the Select Bus that runs along 96th at CPW were not working. I and others who needed transfers and or to pay fares couldn't. So we all got on when bus arrived as am sure plenty others did before and after. No one said "boo".
Is the M96 a Select bus now? It used to be my lifeline but now all trips begin and end with the Q-train.
It's RAMPANT on the buses, but don't see it too often on the subway. I was just on the B63 today and some young rich woman gets on the bus and swipers her card and the driver was like, no money and she was like omg i have another and again... no money. he let her slide. She came across as a serial scammer to me. Rich people can be just as nasty about evading the fares as the poor, especially when they hop on the buses in this cold weather cuz they don't want to walk 10 blocks to their 3 million dollar brownstone.
I will say... If the MTA gets rid of the Unlimited i will be PISSSSSSSSSED. Cuz I hope on and off buses and trains all the time. I probably would have to spend 20 bux a day just on transportation if I didn't have an unlimited!

$20 a day? I thought you were broke and spend time at home with your mutt?
I have an unlimited metrocard through work. Yes I do WORK. But I also like to perambulate around the city. If you had reading comprehension skills you would understand what I said. Without an unlimited metrocard, the amount of money I would need to spend on transportation for my current way of doing things would be prohibitive and cost 20 maybe MORE in the summer.
And yes, I AM broke. But to have the freedom that an unlimited metrocard provides one in this city feels like FREEDOM. If I had to think that I just spend 2.75 or whatever each fare is per ride now I would go insane and my quality of life in this city (which is already at an all time low) would plummet to the point of massive depressive crap.
I am also one hundred percent certain the MTA is going to nix the unlimited option once they put in their stupid new system of swiping your smart phone. I don't even have a smart phone lol i'm that ratchet. Also, just noticed on 5th avenue in Park Slope... near Dean Street YESTERDAY a brand new countdown clock for BUSES! It worked! Today? it was already out of service, and they could have only put this up like last week cuz it wasnt there last weekend.
