Have situational awareness and walk to the other side of the street if you see someone who makes you uncomfortable. The best thing to do is to stay away from known dangerous areas with specific demographics that are prone to violence (I don't have to spell it out) and try to stay inside at night or at least only go out in trafficked areas at night.

Be careful when approaching homeless people because a lot have mental illness.

ooooh lord!!! The likelihood of you being slashed is very slim UNLESS you decide you want to be in environment or associate with people who will or can get you slashed. Its not like we have a slashing epidemic going on here. So annoying.

I just wear a hockey mask and dirtbike padding everywhere. Also I drove some huge nails through the end of a baseball bat so I have a spiked club for protection. I feel pretty safe on the subway.
