Lol....thanks for the support Moth. I prefer not to diss any restaurants, especially those in my borough as I try my best to spend/keep my money local. As a result I try to eat/shop as much as I can locally and have eaten at many many MANY places in City Island...and the verdict is always the same: food is great for those who equate good seafood with Red Lobster, or whose ONLY experience with seafood are other City Island restaurants. The actually decent seafood restaurants in City Island are few and far between..I do like the Black Whale. City Island overall is great to see once for a couple hours...but there just is no reason to be there...and that's how the locals want it.
I have eaten at Sammy's a couple times...and it was literally no different than Sammy's...I think they use the same menu!!! (sarcasm)

I was always partial to the Fish Filets at White Castle on Fordham Road. Fine fish from the brackish waters of the River Harlem.

Sorry I meant it was no different than Red Lobster. I have never tried the fish fillets at White Castle, however judging from the burgers I have had at White Castle, I would be very fearful. They are fine going down..but the rest...well....is better left unsaid.

White Castle Murder Burgers are only for the nihilistic or the suitably tanked. But the fish filets are not too bad.

I think the majority of visitors to City Island ARE from the Bronx in general, and the restaurants here have geared their menus to provide the food that their patrons request. . . therefore, there are an inordinately large number of fried seafood places, but there are also restaurants like Artie's, which serves world-class continental food... Ohana, which does a great hibatchi Japanese dealio, and of course, at places like the Sea Shore or JP's, you can ALWAYS get baked or broiled seafood dishes, as opposed to fried...
Also worthy of mention is the Bed & breakfast, which serves a revolving menu in quaint surroundings, the aforementioned Black Whale, and the Treehouse, which does northern Italian/Tuscan food.
And believe it or not, the very best PIZZA I've had in NYC comes from a little bodega, right at the north end of the island... it's better than Famous Ray's, or John's, or any of the traditional "standard bearers"...
Just sayin' - - - you don't have to have fried shrimp here..... the problem City Island has with its image, is that most people never look past the plainly obvious, to the treasures that lay, just beneath the surface....

What area/part of the island would you suggest to live in if you have a small child (2 years old) and commute to Brooklyn Heights & West 22nd Street? Are there Day cares/Pre-K on City island?

City Island is a very small island, 1.5 miles long and .5 wide, the island has
approx. 4,500 people, several churches, and I think two schools, one public and one Catholic. Famous for seafood, there are several restaurants that are fairly good.

Yeesh. Sounds like all you foodlovers need to get together for a meal and a beer. Too bad you probably wouldn't be able to agree on a restaurant. Maybe someone's got a backyard...

City Island is a nice place to live , but commuting and childcare are very difficult and I will be leaving CI as soon as I can because of them.
Commuting is tough. It takes me about 1-1.5 hours to get to Midtown. The express bus gets caught in traffic on the Bruckner, and on 5th Avenue until it reaches the 70's. If you are driving to Brooklyn there will be traffic. If you are taking the train to Brooklyn, i feel sorry for you.
The express bus only runs twice in the morning an twice in the evening. The evening buses are early and unless you can leave work by 5:00 you will probably miss it. It doesn't really make sense. Summer time is quicker on the express bus, but as soon as school starts, it adds about 15 minutes in daily delays.
The 6 train seems to time its arrival at Pelham Bay Park so that the Bx29 has just pulled away. The 6 train is awful. I usually wait 5-10 minutes to transfer to it at 125th Street. Once it passes Parkchester, it seems to stop at each station for a few minutes and then waits outside of Pelham Bay station for several minutes waiting for another train to leave so a spot will open up.
Daycare is also challenging. There are no formal daycares, and hiring someone local as a "nanny" is very expensive. We take our child to a daycare off of City Island, this has its own challenges but has worked out better for us so far.
Feel free to send me a private message and I can give you more details, but if you need childcare and are commuting, CI may not be the place for you.

Honestly I've always looked at City Island as a nice place for older couples with kids out of the house already. Other than than I would not recommend.
