I apologize if this has already been answered, I can't find anything related to my question. I want to move to the NYC area, but don't have a job lined up and don't have anyone I'm close to (family, friends) that could qualify as a guarantor, or would feel comfortable being a guarantor. Recently graduated college with a math degree and I have about 8k saved up, which would seem to be enough to get started anywhere, but I get it.
BUT- I don't really mind living out of the city at all. I would like to be relatively close though, maybe less than 25-50 miles to manhattan. Will all of the crazy guarantor stuff most likely come up even in like, say, Patterson or Hempstead? Is there a rough "radius" of where a guarantor is going to almost definitely be needed? I mean, surely it has to end eventually, right? Is it needed only in NYC city limits, or is it the tri-state area? It would seem like that might get pretty arbitrary. Any kind of advice would be greatly appreciated!!! Pretty frustrating. Thanks.
Just about every "I want to move to New York" post received responses that included pointing out the sheer difficulty of obtaining housing here without a local work history.
You can try the roommate thing but even there, people often want stable work histories.
And in New York, you tend to get what you pay for - or far less.

New Jersey could be easier, I have no idea.

I imagine you'll be able to find a roommate situation, especially since you are not so picky about the area. There are areas that are not as popular (but still safe with decent amenities) where competition for roommate situations won't be as tough. Make sure you have a place for the first few days (like a hotel or AirBnB) and hit the ground running making appointments for roommate situations.
I think this would work but obviously it's just a guess.

But hey, there's a NJ forum! Why not try asking there?
Of course, while it's less expensive, landlords in every state still tend to want to rent to the employed. But maybe someone has a suggestion, like renting a room, paying in advance.
If you want to live in Paterson, remember that it has only one "t"
Find a sublet on craigslist. Find a roommate and they will likely want you to pay first/last/security or whatever.
You have to find an actual person though - there were tons of brokers posting on there as well and of course they will want all of the paperwork for a lease. So you have to sift through the garbage.
That's what I did.
