I get food stamps. Keeps me alive. I often do not make the meals at the shelter where I live, because I'm out picking up bottles and cans. (I don't do anything illegal with my EBT benefit)
Sometimes, I get shrimp, which I guess is considered a luxury food item. But, it's good for me. It's nice and fatty and full of food value. I don't often have much appetite for food, so I like high fat stuff.
I'd consider shrimp a good buy, actually. Do you buy them fresh or frozen?
As far as I know one is not allowed to buy already prepared food. No fried chicken......etc. one has to buy the raw product and fix it oneself. So stated in the rules.
Some places actually accept EBT for prepared foods.

They're fresh, cooked - I gather they steam them. $20 something a pound. I get them at the Morton Williams supermarket at 2nd Ave and 23rd Street. Great market! The deli people will cut me enough of their in house London Broil (also very good, and a good value) for just one sandwich, which is what I want. Other markets will sometimes go way over, not so good for me.
I usually buy just two or three shrimp, they're very large and that's enough.
It’s been almost three years and while shopping at Fairway today I see the same guy! This time he had oysters and some veal cutlets. Time to pay, $88, boom SNAP card comes out. I just lold.

Maybe they eat rice all month and save it for one good meal a month.
Some 15 or 20 years ago, I was in a health store in Forest Hills. I saw an old woman, in a fur coat, pay for her supplements (vitamins, minerals, etc.) with food stamps.

True story.
They do give out fur coats as part of homeless clothing drives (something on the coat is usually intentionally damaged so that the homeless recipient cannot resale it for big bucks). And this woman could have easily have had the coat from when times were good
so what? as long as he’s not buying drugs, or liquor, it’s quite alright. the fact that high end stores accept food stamps should tell you that people are not as well off as you think. also a lot of JEWS (gasp) are on food stamps. there is a rather sizable Jewish population on the UWS and they need these benefits, so it ain’t just blacks and hispanics baby
