Nearly every one of the piers that had made the neighborhood into an industrial powerhouse had been destroyed—either demolished, filled in with toxic waste, or left to collapse into the New York harbor, and a walk through the neighborhood could end in a wild forest, a derelict power plant, or a hollowed out shipping terminal.
