schools in brooklyn ny
THinking of moving to Brooklyn as I am taking a job in brklyn heights.
We have 2 girls ages 8/10 and the older one is going to middle school in sept.
Are there any schools that people can advise in the area. Obviously we want it all-safe area, low crime, affordable 3bed (850k tops) and decent schools.
Is it possible in Brklyn or should I look elsewhere?
Appreciate any advice as we are moving July 08!

Many of the schools in Southern Brooklyn [Bay Ridge, Midwood, Bensonhurst etc.] are highly recommended. For some odd reason, despite neighborhoods like Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope being really nice, alot of the schools there are quite horrible.

I thought Park Slope had good public schools?
I wouldn't let the public schools hold you back though. If you really want to live in Brooklyn, you should look into private/parochial schools if the public ones aren't up to your standards.

What are the parochial schools? The private schools are big bucks, St Anns is 25k per yr per kid ie 50k post tax dollars per yr. Insane!

Parochial schools are just the average parish school in every neighborhood. They should cost under $5k per year, most are probably closer to $3k.

Are those supposed to be above your average public school and below the private school?

That would generally be the idea (although I suppose its not true in every case). How do you guys not know about this? There are parochial schools all over the country.

I've heard of them, but thought it was a long the same lines as a private school-therefore costing upwards of $20k in A parochial school is much more affordable, but most people here when talking about moving to NYC with kids always mention that you need to be able to afford private schools which cost a ton. I've never heard anyone here until this thread that actually mentioned a parochial.
Now I'm really glad I came across it b/c $5k is definitely doable.
