Over the last few months, once in the late afternoon and once after 6 PM someone has knocked on my door with an I.D. badge and a clipboard saying they are from Con Ed and mentioning something about the "back of your bill". Both times I informed them I was not expecting Con Ed and they became agitated. I am curious to see if anyone else gets these, And if this is just someone soliciting as I think it is. Most solicitations seem to come through phone or email as opposed to door to door. I lived in numerous buildings in my life and don't recall this in the past. I do not open the door as we have all heard of the ambush type robberies that have occurred from people posing as utility workers. I informed the super who said he would kick them out of the building if they are not there for a legit purpose from a utility company.

I don't recall this ever happening either. The only time I got an unexpected visit from a utility company was when National Grid had to shut off my gas for a few hours to do some work in the street.

Yep. I've gotten those a few times now. One time it was a young guy and two girls. One other time a young girl and the last time a young guy. They always start out saying something along the lines of "Do you know about the new law that can save you money on your utilities? Do you have your con-ed bill with you? I'd like to show you something on the back."

I tell them I'm not interested, and they say "they are not selling anything. It is to get the public informed".

I feel like they are trying to get you to switch to one of those third part utility payment companies. I don't know much about the subject, but maybe someone else does.

I always tell them to get lost.

This is exactly the purpose. And apparently they do not need to "get" you. If you produce a bill they simply take the number and switch you.

FYI - the latest pitch is: "You will be receiving a big discount on your bill it's right on your bill just show me the bill ..." They insinuate that they work for ConEd right up until you actually ask them.

They are also trespassing and you can remind them about that.

This reminds me of the practice known as "slamming" that goes on with phone companies. Thanks for the info to you and all else sharing here. Very rare unexpected home visits from strangers yield anything good anyhow.

Yep. They care not from Con Ed, but they do talk about your "Con Ed bill," which makes it seem like they are. They have never visited our house, but call numerous times a day.

I've gotten this too a few times. Last time I got really annoyed. I believe they are from what are known as ESCOs. When they view the back of your bill they actually take the info to switch your electricity provider without you knowing. That's my understanding.

Exactly.
And it is not cheaper. It's a scam.

its a scam. con ed is the primary supplier of electric. first off, if con ed is going to visit your building, they'll let your property manager know. notices will be posted. SCAM. on the back of your con ed bill, con ed tells you about these practices. don't even waste your time.
