What is Arverne, Queens like?
Could anyone write me something about Arverne, please? I have a chance to work there in holiday, but I heard it's not a safe area. Is that true?
Thank you.

yes, it is true, it is a vast wasteland of empty streets, housing projects and failed urban renewal

Thank you for the response.
Anyway, I'm worried now, because I wanted to go there as an au pair... Shouldn't I get the offer?

There are worser neighborhoods in New York, but Arverne is pretty trashy. In fact, there's pretty much nothing there.

You may want to read this thread, it gives a pretty good look into Arverne & the surrounding areas:

arverne actually isnt that bad of a neighborhood...only real bad part is edgemere and arverne houses at the eastern end of the neighborhood. the rest of arverne is mostly 1 and 2 family houses. there's another housing project at beach 71st and beach channel drive called carleton manor (or 71-15 as the locals call it) and that project has a rep for stick-up kids. aside from the projects though, arverne isnt a bad area...its an ok area. from 1 to 10 i give it a 5 for crime.
oh yeah i forgot ocean village at beach 56th and the boardwalk, that complex is pretty bad too. just stay out of those parts of arverne and you'll be fine.
are you going to be working at peninsula hospital?

No, I'm not. I wanted to take care of two children in a private house - my host family wrote they live in a duplex with a swimming pool, not in a block.

Jagna, that area can vary... each street can have a diffent feel to it. What street is this house on and we may be able to give you a better idea. There are some nice blocks down towards the bayfront like Bayfield & Decosta Ave, for instance.
