I have to say no where is safe, but if you need to be there just have your guards up, stay alert and be safe. That's my advice
To you.

I drove over there the other day and it's still ghetto as ever. No, it's not a place to hang out late at night.

Not safe.

Safest section of Sutphin is north of Jamaica Ave.

None of your friends know the area or have been there before? May I ask why your group is planning to hang out in such an unfamiliar location at midnight?

Sounds like you are the one up to no good? What do you consider "bad"? Some would think its aggressive to see people hanging out on at mid night. What are you up to over there? It all depends depends depends.

I wouldn't suggest walking around that area at night.. It's sketchy during the day but doable, at night I wouldn't risk it.

109th Avenue is around 3/4 of a mile south of the LIRR station. That's pretty deep into South Jamaica (you're past Liberty Avenue and past South Road at that point)
