Tolls should be eliminated wherever they are found. One of mankind's worst ideas. Of course we have to pay for the bridges & roads. Do one of two things: combine it with the gasoline tax. Or, charge several hundred dollars up front when you register your car. I've had enough waiting in lines at tolls, and/or enough near collisions as everyone weaves in and out, both before and after the toll booths, trying to get the shortest line in or the correct lane out.

They can set things up so that they just scan the license plate and bill you. No toll booths. No slowing down.

I don't mind if the tolls are used to fund what is being charged for. If they want to use the money to maintain and improve the bridges, that's fine.

I have a huge problem with them taking the tolls, and using it for mass transit. Let the transit riders pay for transit, and the drivers pay for the roads and bridges.

Say want you want, but NJ's highways and many roads beat the pants off NYC. You come out of the tunnels or over the bridges and it is smooth pavement. In contrast driving on NYC streets or the highways such as the FDR Drive, Gowanus or whatever is pot hole (ok crater) city. There is a reason you see so many hubcaps on the side of NYC roads along with drivers changing flats. This and or forever having to have your vehicle's alignment repaired.

They should remove all the toll collectors immediately... but I suspect they keep them more so to have control and eyes, rather than their intended use. TBTA employees could move to other jobs within the MTA.

MTA just needs absurd amounts of money to operate.
They already collect cash from cab fees, car registrations, licensing fees, payroll in any county that is touched by their services,

The plan advocated in a lot of ways is a good one. It spreads traffic by evenly distributing the tolls for driving. I don't see how it can possibly result in a net gain though. Many drivers will shift patterns, and for some- lower tolls will encourage more driving.

... but it throws a kick in the seat, another $1.40 assessed on Manhattan cabs below 96th.

Want to reduce traffic? Finish the damn cross sound bridge/tunnel.
Want to raise revenue? Incorporate a zonal payment system for the subway.

Anything to cut down traffic in Manhattan is fine with me. A $5 tax hike on every taxi ride is a good start.

But I agree with the poster who said toll booths are a terrible idea...they create their own "congestion."

Anyone driven through New Hampshire in the last few years? You have EZ Pass, you get into a two, maybe three lane section that has no toll booths and just keep driving. Your pass is scanned as you go through. No lines, no slow down, no nothing. It's great.

Move NY East River toll plan takes step toward reality - NY Daily News

Someone should paper all the cars in Rodriguez's district with flyers letting them know about this, so that the drivers there know what kind of $hit his pulling.
Agreed. The toll (tax) has nothing to do with congestion because the only people who drive into Manhattan are the ones who need to and have no other option. Who really would want to drive into Manhattan if they could prevent it. Other options are de facto impossible because of where they live or where they have to be at a certain time. These tolls would only take more money out of the pockets of already massively taxed residents and do nothing for congestion.
