You'd be surprised at how many NYers do not register to vote including those who have been here for decades if not all their lives.
One excuse I commonly here is they want to avoid jury duty. Tell them that NYS and NYC courts have many ways of getting names (taxes, drivers license, professional licenses, etc...) but they still won't listen.

For what it's worth, last two presidential elections that i voted, I seem to get called for Jury Duty a few months later.
I registered to vote when I was about to turn 18 during a trip to the West Village to buy a bong. The girl with the clipboard couldn't believe I checked Republican. She was incredulous! My friend and I joked that there was no way that registration was getting handed in. Oddly enough, she did it.
In the 20 years since, I've only missed voting once because I was overseas serving our country and didn't ask for my ballot in time. I've voted every single year no matter the elections at stake. If more right leaning people did the same, we'd be able to shake the burden of leftism in this country.
