Default How do I get from Stewart Airport to NYC?

I am flying into Newburgh, NY, but I need to get to Manhattan. I do not know anything about getting around either place. If you can help with suggestions, please be very specific. I need to end up at W. 83rd street. I checked other threads, but since I don't know the areas, I couldn't understand them clearly.
Thanks!

Hi, magcats. Where are you coming from, that will land you at Stewart? Your airport of origin matters.

Newburgh is 55-60 miles (88.5 km) north of New York City.
Are you visiting someone at West Point Naval Academy (which is near Stewart)? I ask that because if you DON'T want to go to West Point, and you DO want to be in Manhattan, landing in Newburgh is very inconvenient.

You would do much better to land at LaGuardia, or JFK (Kennedy), or even Newark airports. Those airports receive every day thousands of passengers who are headed for Manhattan, so there are many transportation options to Manhattan. If you can change your flight(s) to land at one of those three airports, you'd have a much easier time.

In the meantime, I will go searching for some Newburgh to NYC information to help you. See you later

Best bet is to hop on a cab at the airport. Costly, but it will get you straight to your location because public transportation will not be easy.

If you plan to use p/t, here it is:

Use this shuttle bus: Commuter: Newburgh Beacon Shuttle: Leprechaun Lines and transfer to the Metro-North Hudson Line heading south to NYC: mta.info | Metro-North Railroad.

Your closest station to your destination would be Harlem-125th St. station. Then you have to take another bus and so on and so forth. It's too much of a hassle, IMO. Take a cab.

Here's the airport's website: The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey

They should have buses going straight to the Port Authority Bus terminal on 42nd & 8th from there. If so, you could do that and hop on a cab there instead.

Here ya go:

You can catch a shuttle or taxi from the Newburgh Airport to the Beacon station on the Metro-North train line. Details --> HERE

Take Metro-North to Grand Central. Once you're there, take the S shuttle or #7 train to Times Square and transfer to the uptown C or B train or the uptown #1 train. (The #1 train runs up Broadway, the C and B will let you out at Central Park West -- the subway you choose will depend on where you need to end up on West 83rd St.)

I hope that helps!

Hey,
Thanks for your replies. I booked my flight through Skybus and right now the cities that it flies into and out of are very limited , so I'm flying out of Greensboro, NC, and into Newburgh. I am coming up to visit my niece.
I'm going to try to copy your responses and go from there. I like different perspectives, so if others have another way to try, feel free to add on!
Thanks again.

Metro North makes perfect sense; a taxi from Stewart to the city also does, if you're willing to spend a lot of money.

The only thing I would add is: take a taxi from Grand Central up to 83rd. It will be much safer, and perhaps faster, than taking asubway, and changing to another subway, and then walking after you exit the subway -- especially since you don't know anything about the city, the complex subway system, and the streets. Since you'll be spending quite a lot of time getting out of Stewart, then taking the train down to the city, you might not want to add another three-quarters of an hour trying to negotiate the subways. I think a taxi from Grand Central would work well.

Have a smooth trip!

009's recommendation of Leprechaun lines sounds great! And when you get to GrandCentral, either via MetroNorth or Leprachaun, you can just go right out to 42nd St. and hop the westbound M-104 bus, which turns north on 8th Ave., then Broadway. It will drop you on 83rd & Broadway. If that's too far west, you can take either the M-104 or M-42 from GrandCentral, and take the M-10 up Eighth Ave/Central Park West. You can also transfer at Ave. of the Americas (aka Sixth Ave.) for the M-7, which is on Amsterdam Ave. by the time it gets to 83rd.

Here's a Manhattan bus map (pdf): http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/maps/manbus.pdf

Only thing I would mention is that is might be difficult to take a city bus/ city train with all your luggage (especially the trains). It's challenging to walk with all that stuff up and down the MANY stairs you will def. have to walk up& down.

If you can afford it I would take the taxi, or do a taxi to Metro North then taxi from Grand Central.

any savings gained from flying into stewart will be negated by the costs/time of getting from there to NYC, promoting the airport as an alternative to the real NYC airports is almost consumer fraud

Except for passengers bound for the northern suburbs.
