The only somewhat shady areas that I can think of are either Junction Boulevard [Elmhurst/Corona border] or Roosevelt Avenue [but I think Roosevelt Avenue is actually Jackson Heights]. I find it to be a safe neighborhood for the most part.

I'm just curious, is the NYU dorm out of the question?

I went to NYU twice and a lot of NYU dorms would soak up the entire $1500 in his budget.

I think the north side of Roosevelt Ave is Jackson Heights and the south side is Elmhurst. For instance, I know that Taqueria Coatzingo has a storefront on 82nd St., just south of the 82nd St. 7 train stop on Roosevelt in Jackson Heights, but the address of the restaurant is Elmhurst. (By the way, this place gets rave reviews for its tacos on Chowhound.)

Roosevelt Ave is a bit seedy in general, and I would not want to live on it or right next to it. But when I think of Elmhurst, and the areas I was suggesting to the OP - are closer to Broadway, and the subway stops I was suggesting he locate himself near are on the R/G/V lines and not the 7. The Broadway area is also the Chinese/Asian area, while Roosevelt Ave is more Latino.

The R/V/G lines run local and takes too long. Areas around the R/V/G are generally depressed. Try to find a place around the 74th St. Roosevelt/ Broadway station (7,E,F,R,V,G). The commute is good and there's too many people for you to get bothered. Remember, at night, Jackson Heights/ Elmhurst/ Corona area is known for it stick ups.
