Hey guys I was just wondering how much a week/month you spend on food for yourself. Just to get an idea with how much more money a week/month I should be making to cover rent and food supply.

I think that really depends on your household. How many people are living with you etc. I live by myself...I spend like about a $100 on food per week. Cuz Im barely at home. So I eat out alot.

Depends how much you eat out. Usually $15-20 a plate (taxes, tips, or delivery included) for a no-frills restaurant.
Just for comparison, a box of cereal costs $5.50. Six pack of soda costs $5-6. |

I think you're overstating the cost of groceries. Go to FreshDirect.com, and you'll see that a six pack of soda doesn't cost 5 dollars. More like $2.19

Freshdirect comes out slightly cheaper than NYC grocery stores only if you buy in bulk. That's assuming the thread starter has space to store his bulk groceries. But if he did, he wouldn't be worrying about food costs. Would he? |

Yeah by myself, just trying to get an idea of how much money I should be making. I am expecting to make around $1200-$1500 a week, so I could pay rent in a week a half maybe and then an extra $500 a month on food and what not. Then the rest of my money on any other bills / entertainment.

No it doesn't Ace. Fresh Direct's website says that the delivery fee is $5 for $30 worth of groceries. If you tip another $5, that's $40. Apportioning the tip and delivery fee to a $2.19 six-pack of coke brings the actual price of it up to about $2.86. That's assuming your order is the minimum $30 order. The delivery fee doesn't go up any higher, but you'll likely tip a little more the more you pay. In other words, the actual cost of that six-pack will never be higher than $2.86.

FreshDirect is GREAT. I swear by them. Use them every other week and it's CHEAPER than going to the supermarket. For just about everything except what I get at the Greenmarket near my place of employment.

Well lets make this clear. I plan on moving to the city.. well moving to say astoria or park slope or something of that like in another borough. I am guarunteed a job as a waiter at the red lobster in times square. I am nervous as I have heard that waiters can make anywhere from $1000 - $1500 a week as a server in the city. I know some of these people could be working at the upperclass french restaraunts where meals cost $150. My heart could be calmed if I really knew what to expect to make as a server in the city, I know the red lobster in times square is 3 floors and extremely busy, I think there is a lot of money to be made in there and as time progresses I can move up into the richer restaraunts. I just need a little confidence as to whether or not I could make even at least $1000 a week which I think would be easy as in my little town people make up to $800 a week in a city population of 30,000.
The last thing I want is to end up in the city not being able to make enough money to pay for rent and all my other necesities that is my biggest fear. Do you guys think it is duable as a waiter starting at red lobster to survive living in a place like astoria or some other outer borough? |
