Hi, I'm moving from UES to Murray Hill. Could you give me a ballpark figure as to how much the movers would charge? I don't have much in the way of furnitures - Queen sized bed, 3 seat couch, 1 seat sofa, small dining table and chairs, and a couple of small side tables. And if you could recommend a mover or 2, that'll be great. How much does storage cost?

Probably around $1500-$2000. You can negotiate for less. Depends on whether its an elevator building, etc. Call around for estimates.
Most charge a minimum of 5-6 hours at $100/hr. Also negotiate the number of movers. I used Flat Rate Moving. |

And don't forget to take out extra insurance. The movers' insurance covers a flat rate at about 50 cents/pound...

And buy your own cartons, bubble paper, tape and other supplies, because the movers' mark-ups on that stuff are dramatic and unjustifiable.
Good luck in yr new place! |

And anything YOU (rather than the movers) pack is NOT insured against them breaking/damaging it.

Last time I moved was two years back, so the prices might have changed, but I paid $100 per hour for a truck and four guys. The more you expect them to do (packing, assembling furniture etc), the longer it takes. We packed most of our stuff ourselves and ended up paying for 8 or 9 hours. It sounds like you have a lot less stuff than we did (we are a family of 3 in a 2-bedroom apt), so it shouldn't take a whole day. With tips and everything I paid around $1000-$1100.

Subject: New York city based moving company specialized in "Flat Rate" !!! Rate was good..service was suck & stuff missing after the move !!!!! DO NOT USE THAT COMPANY who speclized in flat rate !!!
Moved from Long Island to PA. 1) After they load the trucks (which was late almost 3 hours, as I ask & was promised that the trucks will be no later then 8 am & they actually showed up closed to 11am)The Forman of the job told us that he have to go some place in the bronx to fill up the trucks with fuel .."Strange" how come the truck did not refuel before they came to load !!! The Forman said that he needs money to fuel !!! however in the middle of the move a "supervisor" from that company came in with company car to check on the work..so how come he did not gave the Forman money to fuel the trucks ??? 2) We left Long Island right after the trucks left out old house..we drove to Pennsylvania in normal speed..& we waited for the trucks which came in around 2 hours after us..funny the trucks went for 2 Hour fueling ?? so..what's really happened in that " 2 hour " mystery ??? since we had around 200 boxes of diff. sizes,It will take few more months to know exactly what is & which boxes "MISSING" from our delivery.. On a different matter..from 6 movers with 2 trucks only one spoke english.. My next move will be done by me, myself & I.. |
