Can you find a decent place in Manhattan's China Town for $700 per month? I am just looking for a single bedroom place for a student. Thanks

No way. Unless you like living in a Chinese worker's dormitory with random Chinese immigrants from Fujian. Even then I don't think they'd let a non-Chinese person live there.

Chinatown is trashy, IMO. I would live there for even that price.

Nope. And yes, the places the immigrants live and stack 6 to a room aren't going to let you live there (even if you wanted to)

If I remember correctly, the OP is Chinese, however, it still doesn't seem like a good idea.

Unless you are directly connected to China, as in you just got off the boat, you don't have much of a chance of living there. The area is very insular and cheap housing is reserved for new, working immigrants and old timers who have lived there forever. Unless you are very well connected to the native Chinese population I can't see it happening. I'm sure if it was doable developers would've moved in long ago. My girlfriend who is Chinese (her parents immigrated here from China) and speaks the language fluently was unable to get into an apartment there. She looked as well, drawn to the cheap housing.
If you are actually interested in living near strong Asian communities and not just looking for cheap rent in Manhattan you should check out Flushing and Sunset Park. Those are arguably the "real" Chinatowns these days. |

My cousin is straight from Toishan. She and three of her family members live in a decent (that's how she puts it) apartment in Chinatown. I, on the other hand, am 100% Chinese-American. If they ain't letting me in the door, they sure as hell ain't letting you in! I just have to be blunt, 'cause a lot of people out here in San Francisco want to live in the cheap housing in Chinatown. It's just not happening!
