Driving at various EZpass entrances in NY/NJ locations, I noticed a lot of drivers especially NY plates frequently full stops at EZpass entrances even though there is no sign that says to stop and sign says 5mph to 25mph varies between locations. This is one of the causes of traffic jams getting in and around NYC and NJ as the gateways are flooded with cars that aren't moving at good pace. On the NJ Turnpike there is a EZPass lane that says "DO NOT STOP, Maintain Speed" near exit 18 and I frequently have to get around with idiots that are slowing down.

Like you said, they're idiots. I'm pretty sure they don't trust the thing to actually read their EZ pass and don't realize the light doesn't turn green until the last second, you just have to go and it will read. If you stop early like these people are probably doing, the whole system breaks down. I mean, what do they think stopping is even going to accomplish? It's not like there's anyone there to help you.

In some EZpass lanes, the stoplight doesn't change quickly enough to allow a driver going the posted speed to pass through the gate without a full stop. This is new in the past couple years -- I don't know if they've changed the technology in some way that's making this happen, but I've noticed it on the Whitestone and at the New Rochelle tolls on I-95. I agree that it's annoying, but it's not all the fault of bad drivers.

my favorites idiots (sarcasm) are the ones that try to back out the EZPass lane when they don't have one. So dangerous.

I frequently see people who go to the wrong lane and have no ezpass and they sit in front of EZpass lane blocking traffic. This is pretty bad if you are at the Verrazano bridge they have Police there that will pull you over to the side and demand license and will run you up with tickets and other violations.

It sounds like drivers just need to be educated. Signs that tell them specifically not to stop surely helps.

the majority of people stopping in the ez-pass lanes most likely cannot even read english.

and why do all of the EZ-Pass tolls in NYC have a gate? No gates in NJ or Westchester.

Because of of NYC toll booths are expensive so they want to catch people trying to beat tolls by driving really fast through them. The SI bridge is one they have full 24/7 police that will issue summons right away. I'm amazed on a busy holiday weekend they nabbed probably dozens of people without ezpass trying to get through the ezpass lane. Then they run a check to see if you have an expired inspection or other offenses. The tow truck is right there to impound people who are suspended. One can be up for thousands $$ in fines.
