Ferry boat accident on Randalls Island in 1904. Thousand people died. Also the NYC draft riots in 1863. Colera outbreak of the 19th century. Nyc is home a huge number of disasters. Great NY fire.
I was 112 years ago today:
On June 15, 1904, the General Slocum caught fire and sank in the East River of New York City.At the time of the accident she was on a chartered run carrying members of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church (German Americans from Little Germany, Manhattan) to a church picnic.
An estimated 1,021 of the 1,342 people on board died. The General Slocum disaster was the New York area's worst disaster in terms of loss of life until the September 11, 2001 attacks. It is the worst maritime disaster in the city's history.
and Sandy sucked big time! I did not have power for 11 days and did not get heat back until December 2nd! No A train for almost 8 months, fights between other straphangers every morning on that 52 bus, I hope I never have to go through that ever again!!!!!!
Lower Manhattan flooded.
The new shiny freshly built South Ferry station flooded and wrecked that they had to reopen the old one.
Manhattan/Brooklyn tunnels trashed to the point that they have to shut down entire lines for months to fix and fortify them.
Yeah, it's been 4 years and we're still reeling from Sandy.
1863 draft riots. It was the worst riot in the cities history, and also the worst riot in the countries history until the LA Rodney king which sure superceded the draft riots in 1992. Hundreds were kills and hundreds of millions of dollars in destruction. If you readjust inflation of the US dollar today from 1863, that destruction would be in the billions.
