So after all my threads about having a terrible job, I managed to get not one, but two job offers. Both jobs are about the same in terms of what my position would be, both are with large organizations, and the salary is similar. One is in the Bronx (in the Mott Haven area, no subway transfers) and the other is in Brooklyn (Bed-Stuy, one subway transfer.) I live in the UES and currently commute an hour to Jamaica for work, so I'm okay with a longer commute if the job is worth it (right now it's definitely not worth it, but I've been doing it anyway until I found something else.) Being that I'm still relatively new to NYC and really don't know much about either area, which would be a better area to work in? (I know I'm the only one that can make the final decision, but humor me please.) I've been to both locations, and feel pretty safe in both, I'm just not sure if I'm missing something that would make one stand out over the other.

If you plan on staying in the UES then Mott Haven should be a no brainer.

If you're new to the city than go with Brooklyn. You will probably enjoy yourself more, even if the commute isn't as good. If you have no kids or pets than an extra 20 minute commute isn't that big of a deal. It really ALL depends on your lifestyle (are you a homebody? Do you like to go out every night?).

Also, much to the chagrin of many people, as long as you have decent commuting options, it's not always the best option to go for where you live closest to. If you have no kids or pets at home, seriously, do Brooklyn. You will probably find more people your age doing things you're into. If youre a homebody or a hermit, than forget what I said and do the Bronx! (I totally would have back in the day now that I think about all the money I could have saved!)

Try not to make NYC all about work, even though it's probably the major reason most non-parentally subsidized people come here for...

If the salary and positions are similar, take the BX job. You'll be happier with an easy and short commute.

Honestly, go for the agency/company that has the better reputation, and also...find out who your supervisor will be in each job and...go with the job with the saner supervisor!

Seriously, never mind the location.

A supervisor can make or break a job!

Tell the Bronx job you can start immediately and tell the Brooklyn job you can't start until a month later because your boss asked you to stay to handle some projects....so if the Bronx job sucks then go to Brooklyn

With all else being equal, go for the shorter commute.
