Default Looking for a sublet over the summer

Hey everyone
I am looking for a studio or a one bedroom apartment (preferably furnished, but unfurnished is also ok) anywhere in Manhattan during this summer - it will most probably be the period from late June to late October. I'd pay up to 1200$.

I have been checking sublet.com and tons of other similar websites, however, most of the places are available as soon as the ad is posted so they are not helpful at all cause I can't wait till May or June for the openings...
Plus I got no credit history since I am from Europe. I will be working there though, so I guess that shouldn't be a problem...or I am wrong?

House sitting is also an option!
If any of you will be renting your place during this period, feel free to contact me via e-mail. sparkuglia@hotmail.com

Also, if you have suggestions or similar experiences I'll be happy to hear it.

THANKS!

You're not going to find anything in Manhattan for that price.

I am not sure that you won't find a sublet for $1200. I would try. Check the NY Times newspaper.

I'm sure there are places in Inwood (upper upper Manhattan) for that price. Also, sometimes it's easier to find a good deal on a sublet as there are plenty of low-priced rent-stablized apts in NYC and it those tenants want to sublet, they are not allowed to make a profit - the sublet amount can't be more than 10% over what the lease amount is.

However, obviously those places are very much in demand and even if they are offered on craigslist, it will be hard to be the one who gets it. ( I offered a $1000/mo studio sublet one time in a "hot" neighborhood in Brooklyn and got 50 responses almost immediately from people in far-flung places basically begging me for it.)

My advice: arrive here, stay in a hotel for a few days before you start work (my friend gets great deals on priceline.com and just stayed in the Crowne Plaza in midtown for $120 a night). The day before you arrive, start making appointments to see apartments on craigslist. The 2 days while you are staying at hotels, you should be seeing as many places as possible. If the sublets don't start immediately you could take an interim share sublet for a week or two so you don't have to pay the extra time in the hotel.

Also, if you look at craigslist carefully you will see that there are people who are renting out a room to foreign travellers, so obviously they don't mind that they haven't met the person in advance. Instead of a hotel you could try something like this for the first week or two that you are here.

good luck.
