I am a new driver and new to SI. Yesterday I was driving on Major Ave. going west to east. At the intersection with Lily Pond (near the entrance ramp to the I-278 East), which is a wide intersection, there was no traffic light. "STOP" is written on the pavement and there's a STOP sign well before the intersection such that you really have to inch out to actually see the traffic coming from the left and right.

The problem is that in order to inch forward, you have to get into the lane where people are entering the ramp. There's usually a decent amount of traffic on Lily Pond.

I didn't notice any lights that might help to regulate the traffic in this area.

Does anyone drive through this area regularly? Is it known as a dangerous intersection?

You can go down Duer Avenue and McClean Avenue and then find your way back to Major Avenue if you don't want to risk an accident at that intersection. The reasoning for not having a traffic light is probably because they don't want to slow down traffic heading towards the bridge and create a chokepoint, but at the same time, you have a valid point that it's a safety issue to let people cross through such a wide intersection without a light. Maybe the best solution would just be to force all traffic to turn right onto Lily Pond, and put a blinking yellow for the Lily Pond traffic.

You can call 311 or contact NYCDOT and see what they say.
