I hear you loud and clear. I've been here 10 years, and am so defeated over how much I have watched this city chance in the past 5 years or so (rental market, "luxury," etc...) that I am considering a move... when I thought I would never leave this city!
Places I have looked into: San Fransisco and Honolulu. I like them both, but think that Hawaii is for me. Good luck to you. |

If I could find work in my field I would look in Philadelphia were I to move out of NYC. With my work being closely tied to the finance industry, though, the only other places I could resonably find work would be Boston and Chicago. Both are very nice cities and I would not hesitate to live in either one but I don't plan on moving out of NY anytime soon.

I've lived in NYC for over a decade, and both love and hate things about it. My biggest issue with the city is the cut throat business world. You learn fast to never trust anyone if you want to keep your job. The weather sucks unless it's Fall time, especially since most people depend on the subways and buses, and when it's freezing cold and you have to wait for a train, you dream of sunny warm weather elsewhere.
You live your life like a hiker wearing your backpack wherever you go, and probably walk about a mile or more day from all the climbing up and down subway stations steps and walking block after endless block to and from work. The up side is the culture can't be matched to anywhere else. But even that can get played out after awhile. Especially when you learn that whatever color, culture or background a person is, they are all the same. Or I should say, have the same human nature, and most people suck once you really get to know them. In a place like NYC, people learn fast not to have time for anyone else. In other words, most fall prey to having to be an ******* to survive. As far as the Midwest, specifically Milwaukee and Chicago, people are nicer, but there seems to be a little more segregation, similar to Los Angeles. The west coast, specifically L.A., can be the same, except more on the boring side and you have to live in your car 1/2 the time since it's all about driving there. San Diego is nice, but not a lot of industry and job opportunities of course. I think my next move will be San Francisco. I'll let you know how that goes! |

If I had to, I would go to Oneida, Utica, NY. It has generally colder weather (I'm a big fan of snow), many of my family members are there, along with many friends I've met over there. Althoug it's generally not an exciting place, there are still many friends I know there to make up for it. Also I wouldn't mind working for Centro...

Try going to one of those fleeting italian neighborhoods like morris park, howard beach, Lyndhurst, NJ or Cliffside Park, NJ. It has lots of Italian-Americans, but Italian Americans are still more italian, than your average manhattanite these days.
I guess you feel like Furio Giunta |

Left NYC for Charlotte eight months ago after living there for 40 years. I have no regrets and kick myself for not moving sooner. The grass is not always greener though, it all depend on what you hope to get out of the move. I could name the negatives in NC, just like I could NYC, but the positives here outweigh them all. Housing, weather, hospitality and a great job.
Good luck with your decisions! |
