The article says it will take ~3 years to convert. I think they missed the boat on this one. It will be ready just in time for the next recession.

It will reopen as a mix of condos and hotel rooms.

Sad for all the people who will lose their jobs now because of this.

Thats true there is this sweet little elderly woman there who cleans the common areas and always says I've been working here for 34 years.

Those hotel workers let go were given decent severance packages: Waldorf Astoria | Anbang Insurance | Hilton Worldwide

Like the Plaza and other old guard hotels the Waldorf Astoria just cannot compete with modern luxury hotels. That and the place is a big ole barn built for travel and hotel stays of a different era.

The entire complex is not going condo, about three hundred hotel rooms will remain.

Default take over

That's what happens when the chinamen take over. It'll probably look like crap by the time it's done. It'll probably be turned into an upper class chinese prostitute hotel.

Sad to see a NYC icon go away. All that beautiful architecture is going to be removed, and all those jobs lost. Totally sucks.

Well, NYC does need more luxury condos so this isn't a total loss, but those jobs gone will suck.

Doubt it. The iconic public interiors will be renovated like what happened at The Plaza. The exterior is a landmark.

On the flip side, they'll get better prices from better contractors if the market does go south.
