Born and raised in the states with immigrant parents.
In Miami, Spanish is basically a second language and Spanish is widely spoken.
In NYC, the Puerto Ricans are more integrated with the ¨urban culture¨ and use English more.
The Mexicans mostly use a chicano type of SPANGLISH.
Honestly unless their parents taught them or they spoke mainly Spanish at home, majority would speak English more so than Spanish. After all we were born in the states. Lol.

In NYC? It seems among those of Latino descent here in NYC usually by second or third generation Spanish is almost completely lost.
As far as speaking Spanish intelligibly, with minimal slang, change of tone in speech, and garbling of words, Spaniards or those with Spanish descent but are residing elsewhere, speak Spanish the best generally. Amongst other peoples, many speak a garbled sing-song Spanish.
