Some are huge especially if they were built many years ago. Some are not what I would consider nice apartments though. The building, hallways and elevator are usually smelly and looks old.

Besides the urine smell, I would say that the elevators and overall look and feel of the project buildings themselves are no different than the coops found throughout the outer boroughs.

Lots of non nycha buildings have terrible facades and hallway, stair wells but have awesome apts. I was shocked growing up at how many people did have nice apts in the projects despite having a horrible hallway/stairway.
Yes because it's a three-room NYCHA apt includes a bedroom, living room (+ kitchen), and bathroom. And the value is very good cuz it's controlled by the govt.
My grandmother used to have a 4 bedroom apartment in Manhattan. It was huge. My aunt had to downsize to a smaller apartment 3 years ago. It also had 2 bathrooms. The rooms were huge and if the apartment was for rent for market value it would be about 10,000 a month. That's why people don't move out because of the size of the apartments and the rents are cheap. The studios and 1 bedrooms in NYCHA buildings are nice.

If you went into some of the apartments you would think your on the Upper West Side or East Side. The NYCHA buildings in Manhattan are not that bad compared to other buildings across the city. Some people in the projects are living very well. You would be surprised and they are not struggling.
No NYCHA apartments are not small, or shoebox like. Apartments look different in each development, each room size will vary. For example one development may have a full kitchen space while another may only have walking space and separate dining area. Some may have a long hallway leading to bedrooms, while others have little to no hallway. room sizes: I haven't seen any NYCHA shoebox size rooms.
