I'm considering applying for a job with the City of NY which pays abotu $50-55k a year. For the cost of living in NYC, I'm pretty shocked that the average salaries of city workers are so low. I've visited NYC for several years (mostly Manhattan and Brooklyn). I have non-job related reasons to move there. However, after years in the Southwest, the cost of living shift would be shocking.
Realistically, what's it like living as a single professional in NYC for this type of salary? Me: computer analyst, mid-40s, no debt, pretty frugal but haven't had a roommate since college.

If OP were to make 52.5, he/she would be able to pay a max of 1312.50 per month based on the 40X rule. You can find a 1BR in Staten Island or The Bronx for less than that, and OP said he/she is frugal so I think he/she can make it.
But you have to ask yourself is it worth living that much tighter than you likely are right now?
OP, unfortunately that's a real tough spot to be in this city. Because you make too much to qualify for many of these asinine affordable housing lotteries.
Be sure to know that some city jobs may have residency requirements, meaning you would have to be living here already.
