Are you sure about that? I don't remember that happening to me before. Did it say anything on your receipt?

Don't banks do the same thing when you use a credit card from another company to withdraw money?

It might be your bank that's charging the fee.

Yes. Perhaps OP is mistaken on where that fee came from?

No "ATM" fee, but the MTA does charge one dollar ($1 USD) for each new Metrocard purchased. They want you to refill and reused old ones.

MTA proposes MetroCard 'green fee' * - NY Daily News

When the above was implemented a new feature was added to vending machines; you can now add more time in addition to adding money to a MC.

I've been able to NOT purchase a new Metro Card (for the $1) since the "green fee" started. 30 days before the card you have expires, the card machines start to give you an option to get a new one (for free).

I hope to keep this trend going. Lol.

Had that happen for the first time a few weeks back. Cannot recall if the card had expired or was due to do so in a few weeks.

Since live in the City and often walking around "off hours" usually just pop into a subway station to refill. This is a holdover from remembering to go and get tokens on Sunday evening or late night to avoid lines on Monday morning..... *LOL*

I LOVE my EasyPay MTA card. I never have to go to one of those MTA vending machines ever again. Works just like EZPass, takes the money out of my credit card account when my account runs low.

Funny thing is that when I had trouble with this card once (turns out my credit card had been cancelled due to fraud on the account and I had not been notified yet), I went to the MTA agent in the booth and he had never heard of these types of cards!

I use a credit card to refill my subway card at the MTA machines (Chase even gave me 5% in the first quarter on TRAVEL purchases.) There has never been a fee.

OP, it is your BANK that is ripping you off because you are not using THEIR ATM machine.
