I would just live in Bay Ridge, R takes you to Barclays. It's local, but well within the 1-1.5 hour limit.

Why New Jersey and not Long Island? Long Island would be an easier commute since the LIRR has a station right by Barclay's if you're considering suburbs. Otherwise, southern Brooklyn would be your best choice, as others have already said.

Default Staten island

Staten Island is the safest borough right now. Avoid certain areas in the North Shore, like St. George, near the Ferry. Stapleton, and Mariners Harbor, have a bad reputation. Stapleton used to be very nice, but there is some type of people moving there recently that are different. Any area close to the Verrazano Bridge is fairly safe, with the exception of Concord, which is changing. You are very close to Brooklyn, and there is a bus that takes you over.

Most people need a real estate to advice them. Robert DiFalco is one of them. Aside from pockets here and there, 98% of Staten Island is safe. Good-luck

Agree that SI would be your best bet combining affordability with a reasonable commute to Barclays center. You should have no problem getting a very nice 2 bedroom apartment in a safe area for less than $1,900.

In Queens you should be good with Maspeth, Ridgewood, Glendale, Woodhaven, Ozone Park, Richmond Hill, and Howard Beach. Here is an example of what you'll find in Ridgewood:
