Meant that it is rare to see in photos of NYC back then where children of all ages white, black and Latino played (and obviously went to school) together. Know it existed in some places, but not often reflected in pictures.

I actually drove through Brooklyn Heights and the surrounding neighborhoods not to long ago, it looked pretty integrated to me. I'm sure a lot of the people I saw didn't live in Brooklyn Heights, but as a place to hang out it's definitely diverse. And the elementary schools I drove past looked pretty mixed.
