For the other people posting without actual knowledge of real estate $1200 is cheap for a 1BR anywhere. Please find REAL Apts for $1200 for the OP then. As point of reference The cheapest 1br I have is on 150st and priced at $1600.

It's not a 1BR, it's for a room in a 2BR.
1200 is cheap for NYC standards but not that hard to find.

Yeah, at least the people who make minimal effort to find a better deal.

While I agree that finding a true 1 BR for $1200 probably won't happen in Manhattan I do think that there are better deals out there considering my situation.
I am currently paying 1500 for a 2 BR in Bayside with a parking spot. My commute to Tribeca is essentially the same (45 mins door to door) compared to the 103 ST location. I don't think the $1200 premium is worth the pros compared to the cons to moving.
I'm also a Real Estate Agent and contrary to the replies of random people who don't know what they're talking about, finding a 1 Bedroom in Manhattan for $1200 IS a steal.
That part of East Harlem is perfectly safe IMO and you're just as likely to be a victim of crime anywhere else in Manhattan. Harlem as a whole has developed (gentrified) and is nowhere near as dangerous as outsiders make it seem.
The one downside I can think of without actually seeing the apartment for myself is that the 4,5 and 6 trains are a pain. That may be mitigated soon though when the T train opens though, easing a lot of the crowd from those lines.

It is not $1200 for a 1 BR. It is $1200 for a room in a 2 BR apartment.
Ah, in that case you could find something a bit more affordable. For instance, a quick search in our MLS has turned up a 2 BR in East Harlem for $2150, making it $1075 per person. The more roommates you have, the bigger the savings too as the least expensive 3 Bedroom is asking $2700 in the neighborhood, making it $900 per person.
