I am from England so very unfamiliar with travelling distances but can somebody please inform me of differences in distance as i need to be quite central to Manhattan: (train and taxi ride)
I'm not sure about the Bronx, but Brooklyn and Queens are VERY large boroughs. So it all depends on where you live in them. I live in Bushwich Brooklyn, and both the train and a taxi take about 30 minutes to get into midtown. The only real difference is a taxi takes you directly where you want to go, and you are not cramped in among a billion people (seemingly) on the L train. Oy.
Again, with safeness, it depends on what neighborhood you live in, as well as your comfort level (fr instance, I feel fine living in Bushwick, but I've seen alot of people badmouth it.)
At any rate, hope this helps some. Good luck.
Do you have a job lined up in the city. All the areas of Brooklyn close to Manhattan are really nice but far from cheap. If you have a job, what do have to budget on rent.
The best idea is to tell us exactly where in Manhattan you will need to be. It's markedly different if you need to be mostly in east midtown, vs. Battery Park city. I would give you different advice based on the answer.
Secondly, everything pretty much depends on your budget. Can you spend $1400 a month? $2000? $2500? (for rent)
Hiya thanks for your responce, i dont have a job lined up and dont have a clue about the best places to stay im just was planning on getting away from england for a few months and my budget for rent is about $2000 a month. i dont know if this helps?

Remember, you can't legally work here unless you have a visa that permits you to work here, not a tourist visa.
