I have a friend and his wife who are going to the Hamptons for a vacation, after which, they plan to come visit me in the city for a weekend before driving home.
They are coming with a car and will be staying for three days/two nights with me in the city. They are concerned what to do with their car.
What would you advise? Are there any good places to park outside the city and maybe take the LIRR? Would you have them drive into the city and park here? They would prefer to not drive in the city.
Ask them to drive around to find a street parking. upper town isn't that bad but they do need a little patience to circle around. I sometimes get street parking downtown.
or if they can afford it, there are parking lots charge $15/day uptown.
Drive to Manhattan and park in a lot. The savings are negligible for people on vacation. If they plan to going back to the hamptons, I would consider leaving the car in the Hamptons & take the Bus or LIRR to NYC

No, they plan to head back down to the washington, dc area after visiting the city.
My sister always manages to find some excellent deal by going on the parking garage coupons sites. She drives from DE and usually only stays one day/night. So I'm not sure what kinds of deals there are for 3 nights, but it wouldnt hurt to Google "Parking garage coupons discounts nyc" or something like that.
Thanks guys. It seems having them drive in and I'll hop in and try to help them find street parking would be best. If it takes too long, I'll take them to a nearby parking garage.
Off topic: How is everyone here in NYC tonight!? Anything new going on?
Riverside drive between 80-130 is a good route to try for street parking and it is relatively safe for the car as well. They may well enjoy driving up and down that beautiful street between beautiful buildings and pleasant park/river views while scanning for people vacating a spot.
I was always lucky getting a free spot right on Broadway in Morningside Heights on the weekend. There and Alphabet City in the lower east side I was able to find parking for free. Haven't really gone into Manhattan during the week much.
