nyc income taxes?
my son will be working at St. John's Hospital in Far Rockaway and wants to live in a safe area somewhat close by. Is there a benefit for him to rent a place in Queens or should he move to Nassau so that he doesn't have to pay the nyc income taxes? If he shops in Queens, he will still get the benefit of sales taxes, right?

The difference between the sales tax in NYC to Nassau is only a 1/4%.
NYC = 8.375%
Nassau & Suffolk = 8.625%
As far as the "commuter tax" (having to pay the NYC income tax if you work in NYC & live outside of the city), I recall talk about implementing it again but don't know if it was actually re-enacted. Certain NYC employees are still required to pay the "commuter tax" but St John's is a provate hospital, so it shouldn't effect him.

if your son is going to work at st. john's the safest place to get an apartment would be wavecrest, which is a complex about 2 blocks away from the hospital. its gated and has security guards and the neighborhood is not that 0bad. i live in the area.....if you have any more questions DM me.

You're both right, in a sense. Nassau tax is 4.375%, but that is on top of the state income tax of 4% and 0.25% for the MTA. Total 8.625% Every county in NYS has a different tax level. There is 4% flat for the whole state, and the counties run the gamut. The 5 boros, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, and maybe Putnam, Rockland, Dutchess, etc., have 1/4 of a percent for the MTA.
For a private employer you don't pay NYC income tax living in Nassau and working in Queens.
