I've always seen projects from the outside and can spot them from far away, but never saw what it looked like inside. It doesn't look as bad as I expected.

well this is only representative of 1 building in 1 development.....some are in much worse condition, and some are much better. but this is the average.
also i took these pics in the morning and thats when housing usually cleans the building so thats why it looks pretty clean. if i had took pics in the night time, the building may have looked worse, especially the elevator.
but this is just for people who are curious to see what the projects look like.

i should have taken a picture of the elevator door, its all scratched and graffitied up.

Hammels Houses in Rockaway Beach
next door to the new Arverne-By-The-Sea development.

if you want to go to google maps, put in beach 86th street and rockaway beach boulevard, rockaway beach ny. thats not the building i was in but if you put in that address the projects are right on the corner.

maybe i'll take some more pics tonite. so u can see how they look in nighttime too.

I've spent a ton of time in the Baruch Houses on the FDR drive between Houston and Delancey and these pictures look like they could have been taken there. Right down to the elevator door being scratched up. A lot of the NYCHA projects from that era were done exactly alike.

It looks like it's in better condition than the college dorms I've stayed in lol. Now that says a lot for NYC projects.

I've been in those as well. Looks exactly the same. Elevator always smelled like urine (yuck!)

Rachel thats funny you say that...when I saw the pics I thought of college dorms also! Nonetheless..these are VERY different from college dorms..and they are a reasonable assessment of the housing projects.

They do a good job in keeping them clean. I though they look bad all the time. Yeah they do remind me of some College dorms I visited. Also, lets not forget that some College dorms elevators can smell like urine (and vomit) too. Especially after a weeknight.
