I drove a yellow cab while holding a full time job in NYC.

Long as it does not involve criminal activity (drugs, prostitution, etc....) any side hustle is "legal".
Where persons get into trouble has more to do with reporting that income than anything else.
For instance out on the Rock (Staten Island) there is a vast amount of apartment rental going on where income is not in whole or part reported. We're talking about rooms or whatever in single or perhaps two to four family homes. North Shore, South Shore... everyone does it.

I don't need the funds to make ends meet but I think in the future I will get a per diem job in my field just for the extra money.

Not reported because it's not up to code and/or not allowed. Happens everywhere in the 5 boroughs. That's what a lack of housing will do.

Some yes, some not.
Yes, the illegal basement apartments and or places carved up into cubicles are suspect. But there are also plenty of two to four family homes where the apartments are perfectly legal, or would be if registered.
North Shore and some other areas of SI especially have large numbers of one to four family homes where the owner lives in one unit and rents out the rest of house. This and or they live elsewhere and simply rent out the entire thing (each floor or whatever an apartment).
Are you one of those people that randomly start writing about how rich you became with an easy home based job in comments sections?
