I think I was that far, at Bailey Ave

It seemed fine to me

But to my knowledge it gets hood when you go a little further East than that

Well Bailey Avenue is right over the bridge. You were right at the beginning of Kingsbridge Heights, so you did not see everything the neighborhood has to "offer." To top it off, it's an odd area to get around, no major east-west thoroughfares in the neighborhood due to the topography and it being surrounded by Fordham Hill Oval (a bit south but look on a map and you'll understand why I say it), Van Cortlandt Park, The Deegan and the Jerome Park Reservoir.
