I was born in Manhattan's Morningside Heights area in 1965 and left NYC for good in 1992 because I felt it was never my city to begin with. NYC politicians were too politically correct and I felt like an unwanted stepchild out there never mind that I was a native Manhattanite. People who moved to my city were treated with more respect than us natives. I'm not just talking about immigrants, I'm also talking about carpetbaggers from other parts of the U.S.

I grew up in NYC. I was born 1954 and left in 85. Traffic, crowds, subways, garbage...ugggh...I remember as a kid waiting for a light to change and there was trash on every corner and bees flying around. I was not meant for NYC. different strokes for different folks

Life long NYC veteran here and I think that your opinion of this city depends on your point of view. If you came from some hick town then of course you'll love this city. When I was a teen and a strapping young man I loved this city and couldn't picture living anywhere else. ( I actually did live down south for a year and hated it) I loved the energy and excitement here. I didnt even notice the crime and decay because I was too busy having fun. Back then there was something for everyone... poor or rich.
But now as a adult everytime everytime I hit a pothole or see a ticket agent standing over my car or dodge brown snow piles or somebody coughs on the train without covering their mouth or I get my check and half of it is gone.... ect i get reminded of why i hate this city.
Having kids also changed my point of view. Trying to raise kids here is tough financially especially if you want to have them do extra curricular activities like swimming, sports or learning a instrument which some suburban schools do for free. I make decent money but I still feel broke. The cost of living sucks the fun out of everything. The city still has pros but it's not worth all the money and headache, and it's only getting worse... a toll to get from one part of Manhattan to the other? F that!
