Moving to the city in July, 2017. Couple, plus 2 kids (1 boy 1 girl) and no pets. I'd rather spend less than 1500 on housing, and would be ok with roommates. Started looking at housing and its just overwhelming how many options there are.
Me: work from home
Partner: hustles whatever kind of work that's needed.
Daughter: science smart
Son: artistic
Moving from the Poconos, where there is no mass transit and you do need to drive. How do cars work, will we need to sell it to live in the city or pay super expensive parking?

Your budget isn't realistic. Maybe check outer reaches of the Bronx or Staten Island. Even then not sure what you will find for $1500. In many neighborhoods, studio apartments are going for $1400 and up.
If you work from home and the partner isn't moving for a job, then I suggest not moving here. It's too expensive for your budget.
Regarding the car, if you choose to live in a place like Staten Island, then more than likely you could park on the street for free (just pay attention to alternate side rules).
I'm used to a budget like that getting an acre of housing. What's realistic, 2k? Moved out here from south side Chicago, to take care of his dad. Now that he's gone, we're trying to move back to the city.

1200-1300 1BRs are common in the Bronx, but of course that's not big enough for a family of 4 to live comfortably. I agree that it's not worth moving here with that budget and 2 kids.
Just curious. Do people do roommates with a family of four and on that budget?
With kids - I wouldn't.
