Nothing wrong with a hop on, hop off bus! As a traveler, myself, I'm all for anyone visiting my great city in any way!

With that said, both the subway and NYC bus does give you the realness of New York! Subways and buses are as real as they come!

And yes, going to a neighborhood you haven't seen is good, too! But be careful, as some neighborhoods are different than others, as far as safety. With that said, to see any neighborhood, always be aware of your surroundings and know where the nearest bus or subway line is! Have fun.....!

The less safe neighborhoods neighborhoods are wayyy out of the scope of most tourists geographically. Generally speaking, of course.
