Does anyone know if that famous row of skyscrapers on 6th Avenue in the 40's and 50's on the west side of 6th (look like a row of dominoes when viewed from Radio City Music hall) still house the same companies that they did back in the 70's or did they change?
1185 6th(46-47th)- black and white box bldg ( Stevens Tower) the HS of Performing Arts where the filmed the movie "Fame" is on the sidestreet 1211 6th (47th-48th) ( Celanese bldg) maybe the home of Fox 5 news too 1221 6th (48th-49th) Mcgraw Hill bldg housed elaborate bookstore and a mid-late 70's film "NY Experience' 1251 6th (49th-50th) Exxon bldg (50th-51 st) Time Life Bldg(was there since late 50's) (51st-52 street) Equitable life Assurance bldg (52-53 sts) JC Penney bldg 1335 6th (53-54 sts) NY Hilton I know is still there and doesn't seem to have changed (54-55th) Burlington mills clothes making exhibit on the side of the bldg and Ziegfield theater I know there are some who hate this part of midtown and these big box bldgs but i always liked the architecture so if you know what's there now let me know. I haven't thought of checking to see if the companies changed |

You have a Manhattan White Pages? If you look up the companies, you'll either find them at the addresses or not. You can probably use Superpages.com or something similar to the same end.

You can probably find out by putting the addresses into Google. I know Time and McGraw Hill are still there. Equitable has a building on the other side of the street now (1291- I always admire the Thomas Hart Benton mural when I walk by.)
Aren't all those buildings part of Rockefeller center? There's a lot of info in Wikipedia. |

yes, the Celanese, Mcgraw hill and Exxon bldgs were completed in the early 70's and were considered the westward extension of Rockefeller Ctr. The Time Life was completed in 1959 and at that time stood amongst a drab street until the other skyscrapers were built
I used to see 6th Avenue in the 40's as a relief from the adult stuff and craziness on the next avenue over, 7th, which decades ago was a fairly creepy place |

Exxon went to Irving, Texas. The building is one of my favorites in the City (probably designed by Wallace Harrison, of Harrison/Abramovitz). |
