As others have said, call con-ed to come inspect your electrical. Very well maybe someone in an adjoining apartment is tapped into your power circuit someone either by mistake or on purpose.

Nicky,
THat's probably it. If you have a unit that boils water to steam, it consumes a LOT of electricity. Toss it out and get one that just blows room air over a wet wick. It even acts as an air cooler which is a plus if your apartment is overheated. All you pay for is running the fan which is minimal elecrtricity.

Close your windows and seal your vents. No point in humidifying the air if you are going to lose the moistened air right out the window or up the vents. When you buy, order a couple extra wicks...they last about a Winter and then need to be tossed out when you put the unit away for Summer.

Here's the one I bought, an Air King...it was about $50 and takes about 3 gallons of water every second day. I recommend it highly. I bought it from Venting Direct but they might be defunct.

I have a question for you. Did you ever sign up with someone who said you can save money by asking you for coned account number? If you did, that is most likely where that extra money is coming from.

How old/efficient is your fridge? Make sure it's Energy Star rated.

Something definitely does not add up. For my entire house (3 floors) my leveled bill is $103 a month. The most I ever paid was about $170 during summer months. My kids constantly leaves every light on in the house, every TV running and I wash clothes & use the dishwasher just about every other night. It's weird since when I lived in a 1 bedroom apartment, my bill has never been this low. Not sure why the rates of a residential vs PH are different. I do believe Con Ed can come by and give you an evaluation and figure why your bill is so high. As another poster mention, I hope you didn't get suckered into one of those electrical esco people.. Wondering Why Your Con Ed Bill Is So F%cking Huge?: Gothamist

Good Call! This scam where they come to your door offering to switch you to their service is the biggest scam going lately, not clue why coned allows this to happen
