Just got back from a day in midtown and have a question: where are all the trash cans? My wife and I carried our empty coffee cups for blocks, looking in vain for an "authorized" location to dispose of them. We finally disposed of them in our hotel (in front of which was one of those solar-powered compactors, but it was "closed for event"). My guess is that it's related to terrorism, just like lockers in transit terminals.
I know there are more practical and metaphysical questions out there waiting to be answered, but still ...

NYC is currently under a heightened terrorist alert for the Christmas Holiday, this after the horrible incident in Germany and (vague) threats by ISIS to target churches and so forth during the season.
As such the City may have removed trash cans as a precaution against someone getting any ideas.
The tourists take them back home when their vacation is over.
