Hoboken is an awesome place for young (yuppie-type) kids. Great social scene, very clean, and super convenient to NYC. $97k isn't going to go as far as you think and you're going to need a roommate unless the place is a total ****hole.
97k with minimal to no debt will leave him with enough money to find his own place. If you can afford nyc then by all means make the move at rent a place in Manhattan for a year. The experience of living in the city as a young professional will be worth it. Hoboken isn't going anywhere.

Not sure I agree with you. $97k after taxes is, what $2300 every two weeks (after health, a few bucks to 401k.). Even if you spend 50% of income on housing, i) $2300 of disposable income for a month doesn't go far, and ii) you'll be in a pretty ****ty place for $2300/month.

$2300 gets You a sh!tty place?? You have very high standards imo.
About $2.5-3k/year, after taking into account the federal deduction for state and local taxes.
Hence why there are so many temporary H1Bs workers in the Jersey City waterfront. That 3k a year is like 4 months of free rent in one of those room shares.
