Well, as you can see from this picture, NYC may not love him, but the rest of the country does.
Both candidates were complete idiots. A good portion of the country did not vote for either candidate. Most sat it out. What caused Trump to win was bernie blue collar voters in swing States who voted for Trump.

Trump would have just paid people to go to every one of Bernie's rallies and scream 'BLACK LIVES MATTER!!!'. Bernie would just stand in the corner looking like a confused retiree. It would have been all too easy for Trump to beat Sanders.
